Assessment of Learning Powered Mobility

The Assessment of Learning Powered Mobility (ALP) tracks where a person is in the process of learning to use a powered wheelchair — from someone who has never touched a joystick to a confident, independent driver. It was built for people whose cognitive or motor differences mean the usual screening would rule them out before they ever got a chance to try.

The ALP has two halves that work together. The instrument places the learner in one of eight phases across three broad stages by looking at how they handle the joystick, whether they grasp what it does, and their attention, communication, and emotion during driving. The facilitating strategies then say what a helper should do at that phase, so practice stays at the just-right challenge.
