Dynamic Assessment of Social Emotional Learning (DASEL)

The DASEL is an informal, strengths-based assessment built for autistic students, particularly older ones. Rather than scoring how far a student falls from a social norm, it looks at how they solve problems, draw inferences, and read situations, and what they want for themselves.

Several components feed the picture: a student strengths and interests survey covering friendship goals, self-identity, and self-advocacy; digital teacher and caregiver forms; and a therapist observation checklist. Video clips are used to prompt reasoning about realistic situations. The output is not a score but material for writing neurodiversity-affirming IEP goals and documenting the functional daily social activities IDEA requires be addressed.
