What It Measures

The MVPT measures how well a person makes sense of what they see, without asking them to draw, write, or manipulate anything. Every answer is a pointed finger or a spoken letter, which is what makes it usable with someone whose hands do not work well — after a stroke, for instance, or with cerebral palsy.

Forty-five items are presented as black-and-white line drawings with multiple-choice answers. Five kinds of visual perception are covered: visual discrimination, spatial relationships, visual memory, figure-ground, and visual closure. The current fourth edition does not report those five separately — all items sum into a single overall visual perceptual ability score, converted to a standard score and percentile.

Additional Notes

Licensing Notes: The complete kit includes the manual, test plates, and 25 record forms. Reproduction requires publisher permission.

Learn More: Everyone starts at the same point regardless of age, and there are no basals or ceilings — scoring is straightforward. And the five subtests are no longer scored individually; only a total is produced. The MVPT is widely used in driver rehabilitation after stroke or head injury.
