Motor Function Measure (MFM)
What It Measures
The Motor Function Measure was built for people with neuromuscular disease, and its defining feature is that it works whether or not a person can walk. Scales that lean on standing and walking hit a floor quickly for someone in a wheelchair; the MFM keeps measuring.
Thirty-two tasks are each scored 0 to 3, from cannot begin the task to performs it fully and normally. They divide into three dimensions: standing and transfers, axial and proximal motor function, and distal motor function. Each dimension and the total are expressed as a percentage of the maximum possible rather than a raw number, so a person whose legs are severely affected can still show meaningful change in the arms and hands.

Licensing Notes: The scale and manual are distributed free through the developers' own site, which also handles translations. Training is required before use, and the site hosts the training program.
