What It Measures

The REAL rates how well a child manages the practical business of daily life, from getting dressed to catching a bus. A parent, caregiver, or teacher completes it — someone who watches the child every day rather than in a clinic.

Two domains are covered. The ADL section has 78 statements across six areas: dressing, hygiene and grooming, feeding, toileting, and functional mobility. The IADL section has 58 statements covering housework and chores, managing money and shopping, meal preparation, personal safety, travelling, and school-related skills. Each is rated 0 to 3, from unable through seldom and occasionally to frequently able. Raw scores convert to standard scores and percentile ranks.

Additional Notes

Licensing Notes: No special qualifications are required to purchase. Rating forms are consumables. Reproduction requires publisher permission.

Learn More: What sets the REAL apart from other adaptive behaviour measures is why it looks at each activity. Items are written to capture four things: how a child obtains the supplies needed to complete an activity, whether they can maintain a safe body position while doing it, how they sequence the steps, and how they problem-solve and make safe choices along the way. That framing is closer to occupational analysis than to a simple can/cannot checklist.
