What It Measures
The Vineland-3 looks at how well someone handles everyday life (communicating, taking care of themselves, and getting along with others), compared to what's typical for their age. Rather than testing what a person can do in a structured exam, it captures what they actually do day to day, usually gathered through an interview or questionnaire with a parent, caregiver, or teacher who knows them well.
The core version covers three domains: Communication, Daily Living Skills, and Socialization, with an optional Motor Skills domain for younger children, and is widely used to support diagnosis of intellectual and developmental disabilities across the lifespan, from infancy through late adulthood. Occupational therapists use it in community-based, outpatient, and school settings, often with children and adults who have autism, ADHD, IDD, dementia, or TBI, to build individualized education and treatment plans grounded in real-world functioning.
