Young Child and Participation and Environment Measure (YC-PEM)

The Young Children's Participation and Environment Measure (YC-PEM) is a survey that parents or caregivers fill out to describe how their young child takes part in everyday activities at home, at daycare or preschool, and in the community. It also asks about the environment surrounding those activities — what helps or gets in the way of the child joining in.

Developed for children ages 0 to 5 with and without disabilities, the YC-PEM is modeled after the Participation and Environment Measure for Children and Youth (PEM-CY) but rewritten so its questions make sense for younger children. Results are meant to be shared with the child's early intervention or therapy team to guide goal-setting and adjustments to activities. It fits naturally in early intervention and outpatient pediatric settings where participation, not just skill performance, is the focus of care.
